who would jesus ied?

NOTEThanks to PZ Myers for this and for generally being an awesome scientist, activist, thinker and all around cool guy.

This is nice. Andrew Sullivan has a suggestion to exempt those wanna-be terrorists, the Hutarees, from the fold of the faithful.

Surely we can all assent to the notion that a Christian militia of the type now accused of planning domestic terrorism is not Christian. This is why I call them Christianist. Anyone planning to murder innocents by way of IEDs cannot plausibly call himself or herself a follower of Jesus of Nazareth.

Good thing he threw in that specific bit about IEDs, or I'd have to mention all the innocents slaughtered in Christ's name since, oh, the Dark Ages. They are spared by a technological technicality!

But OK, if we're going to redefine Christians, let's go all the way.

It's difficult to watch this video and not have a myriad of emotions flow over you. For me the feelings of; sadness, anger, depression, and then finally a bit of indignant laughter. There's so much wrong in this video it can be a bit difficult to digest.

So after watching the clip, a question comes up:

How will the message come through to people that no matter how painful a truth might be, it's still true? This specific truth in particular being that there are no sky daddies up there watching their every move and further, that there most certainly is no doubt that the myths they have been taught through their Bible are just that... myths. Oh! and that evolution... errr... eviloution is indeed fact!

After all, doesn't understanding the way things actually are matter if we intend to change things for the better?

Props to EverythingIsTerrible for creeping us out even more than we thought possible.

If you don't remember this Christian fundamentalist preacher raging against Pokemon (that's right... Pokemon) from our previous post, here's a refresher.

WARNING:
extreme hilarity at the linked clip though extreme creepiness at this clip.

Please, tell us this isn't the creepiest thing  ever .

Special thanks to the coalition against the Westboro Baptist Church for forwarding this our way.

G R E A T B I G H A P P Y D A N C E P A R T Y  and God Hates ____ counter protest!! (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=230786129770)

On Monday, January 4, at 8:00am, join fellow revelers at the Wortham Theatre for 2010’s earliest dance party as a lively response to Westboro Baptist Church (WBC). WBC, best known for their awful “God Hates Fags” signs, are scheduled to bring their unhappy message of hate, racism, and homophobia to the Wortham, the location for our city’s inaugural activities (including Mayor Annise Parker’s taking her public oath of office).

Don’t let WBC’s messages of fear and rage be the story of what happens on Houston’s streets! Come dance with us! Bring your own boom box and your grooviest mixes of dance music, wear some bright colors (pink suggested), and challenge dour hate-mongers to a funky dance-off! Shake it like you mean it with other dancers and counter-protesters! Twist! Do the watusi! The hitchhiker! Cabbage patch! Or free-style it any way you like!

This will be the perfect way to wake up and warm up and let folks know that crazy-homophobes are not welcome in our city, but right-on, music- and peace-loving people who enjoy radical self-expression most certainly are!

Note of caution: It is highly recommended that you do not engage with Westboro Baptist Church members. If you touch or threaten them, they will sue. They have their own lawyers. Focus on our merriment. It’s so much better.

DATE: MONDAY, 1/4/2010
TIME: Gather at 8:00 am, dance ‘til about 9:30am.
PLACE: 500 TEXAS STREET, HOUSTON, TX 77002-2737 (corner of Smith and Texas)

While this is really funny, isn't there also something to understanding why it is that every new idea that is developed is treated as evil by these people? What an outmoded thinking these people represent.

Thanks to EverythingIsTerrible and Zack for this.
